TitleTHE EVALUATION OF MILK SELECTED TRACE ELEMENTS LEVELS IN RUMINANTS (COWS AND GOATS) REARED IN INDUSTRIAL AND NONPOLLUTED AREAS
AutorAleksandra Brożyńska, Zbigniew Dobrzański, Monika Kowalska-Góralska, Magdalena Skiba
Pages3–14
Keywordsruminants, milk, copper, nickel, lead, cadmium
AbstractShow abstract
The aim of the examination was to evaluate the contamination of cow’s and goat’s milk. The following Cu, Ni, Cd and Pb mean concentrations was recorded: in cow’s milk from polluted area 0.659, 0.2358, 0.007, 0.042 mg/kg; in cow’s milk from area free of industrial pollution 0.227, 0.065, 0.003, 0.019 mg/kg; in goat’s milk from industrial zone 0.671, 0.226, 0.007, 0.043 mg/kg; in goat’s milk from area free of industrial pollution 0.248, 0.063, 0.003, 0.021 mg/kg. The trace elements concentrations in milk from industrial area were significantly higher than the concentrations observed in samples from area free of industrial pollution. However, the Pb levels (0.02 mg/kg) exceeded the limit in both regions.

TitleTHE SEROSTATUS OF THE SINGLE ANIMAL REGARDING BOVINE NEOSPOROSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF STUDY RESULTS
AutorKrzysztof Janeczko, Katarzyna Płoneczka-Janeczko, Krzysztof Rypuła
Pages15–26
KeywordsNeospora caninum, cattle, ELISA, single seropositive reagent
AbstractShow abstract
Neospora caninum infection is one of the significant cause of losses in the cattle reproduction (abortion, resorption and repeat breeding, born congenitally infected calves with clinical symptoms of neosporosis or clinically normal but persistently infected calves). Even one animal, who is a source and reservuar of protozoon (single reactor) determined the stability of infection within the herd. In 2007 forty seven cattle herds were examined in the screening study to bovine neosporosis. Sera were obtained from 25 small herds (“M”, n> 20≤ 50), 11 medium (“Ś”, n>50<150) and large herds (“D”, n≥ 150) respectively. Four hundred and seventy six serum samples were examined for the presence of N. caninum antibodies by an ELISA (Idexx, Cherd Check, USA). Results were considered positive at a cut-off level of s/p ≥ 0,5. The antibody concentration was established for each of examined herds as a mean value of individual results. Of the 476 serum samples investigated, 27,73% (132/476) were confirmed to be positive. However et least one seropositive animal was identified in approximately 80% of all herds, for the herd-level. The number of seropositive reagents respectively to all examined animals was 45/241 within D, 41/110 within Ś and 46/125 within M herds. The minimum recorded number of positive results obtained in the single herd was 0 and the maximum was 10.

TitleSERUM PROTEIN PROFILE AS A SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATION IN DIAGNOSE OF CANINE MONOCYTIC EHRLICHIOSIS
AutorKatarzyna Płoneczka-Janeczko
Pages27–38
Keywordsmonocytic ehrlichiosis, Ehrlichia canis, serum protein, serum protein profile
AbstractShow abstract
Serum protein alterations in dogs (n = 21) with Ehrlichia canis infection determined by indirect fluorescent antibody test IFAT (titres 1:20 to 1:1280) were studied. Compared to the control group of 20 clinically healthy dogs (with the negative results in IFAT), significant decreases in the mean concentration of total protein (p≤0,05), albumin ((p≤0,001), albumin/globulin ratio (p≤0,001) and gamma globulin (p≤0,001) in the infected group were determined. In contrast alpha-2 globulin and beta globulin fractions were significantly higher in infected group. In conclusion, serum protein profile can be used in the clinically diagnosis of monocytic canine ehrlichiosis as a supplementary examination, comparable with haematological or blood smears examinations.

TitleAPPLICATION OF VARIOUS FORMS OF PASSIVE IMMUNIZATION OF PIGLETS IN THE PERIOD BEFORE WEANING IN THE CONDITIONS OF PIG BREEDING FARMS
AutorJoanna Błach, Jarosław Kaba, Barbara Kotwica-Wojewoda, Marek Popławski, Krzysztof Rypuła, Tadeusz Stefaniak
Pages39–49
Keywordsbacteria, immunity, immunoglobulin, swine
AbstractShow abstract
In the conditions of pig breeding farms insufficient transfer of colostrum immunity onto the progeny is a frequently encountered problem, therefore application of preparations containing (in their composition) immoglobulins brings about increase of protective antibodies circulating in a piglet’s organism. Application of the preparations containing in their composition fractions of immunoglobulins in experimental conditions caused increase cells of white blood system. Similarly, changes in the concentration of albumins and fractions α-, β- and γ-globulin as compared to the control group, were observed. Concentration of antibodies IgA, IgM and IgG against E. coli, Streptococcus suis type 2 and Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae ranged in individual groups, but the observed values were not statistically significant in each of the tested periods.

TitleCOMPARATIVE STUDIES OF THE CONTENT OF CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM, SODIUM, PHOSPHORUS, POTASSIUM, CHLORIDES AND IRON IN HORSES BLOOD SERUM AND PLASMA
AutorAnna Burek, Witold Janeczek, Krystyna Pogoda-Sewerniak, Ewa Popiela, Marta Świeżowska
Pages51–57
Keywordshorses, blood plasma, blood serum, blood mineral components, EDTA
AbstractShow abstract
The aim of this study was compared the content of the mineral components in twelve clinically healthly horses, kept under the same environment conditions. The concentration of all analyzed elements in serum was within normal range according to professional literature. Whereas, content of Ca, Mg and Fe in two samples of blood plasma was below the minimum detection limit of a device .On the other hand, it was detected significantly decrease of Ca, Fe and chlorides contents and increase of K content in plasma in comparison with performances of serum analyses. These differences were affected by the presence of Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid dipotassium salt dehydrate (EDTA –K2), which as an anticoagulant disturbed results of electrolyte determination.
