TitleNEW METHODS OF POLY(ITACONIC ACID) SYNTHESIS
AutorAngelika Wesołowska, Szczepan Bednarz, Dariusz Bogdał
Pages5–12
KeywordsKey words: itaconic acid, poly(itaconic acid), choline chloride, eutectic solvents, free-radical polymerization
AbstractShow abstract
Presented research deals with the topic of free-radical polymerization of itaconic acid with redox initiator, which was ammonium persulfate in different reaction media and at different temperature was conducted. Polymerization for eutectic alloys and ionic acid with choline chloride prepared in different proportions, in hydrous environment and in CC hydrate was conducted. An initial, elementary analysis of obtained polymers was conducted as well as assessment of their chemical structure with spectroscopic techniques FTIR and NMR. An effect of variable reaction parameters on the polymerization reaction yield and chemical structure of obtained polymers were tested.

TitleEFFECT OF GLYCEROL CONCENTRATION ON BIOMASS GROWTH OF YEAST CANDIDA PELLICULOSA G4KB2
AutorTomasz Podeszwa, Marta Wilk, Małgorzata Krzywonos
Pages13–22
Keywordsbiodiesel, raw glycerol, yeast biomass, Candida pelliculosa
AbstractShow abstract
The main by-product of biodiesel production, which in recent years has rocketed, is raw glycerol. Per ton of produced ethyl or methyl esters of fatty acids about 100 kg of raw glycerol was obtained. Utilization of raw glycerol is one of the most important and serious challenge in the environment protection. The aim of the study was to verify the production possibility of the cell biomass yeast Candida pelliculosa G4KB2 on pure glycerol in shake-flask cultures. In the first stage of the study, ability of growth on pure glycerol yeast Candida pelliculosa G4KB2 was checked by passaging them in a modified agar Petri dishes – YPDG (YE, peptone, dextrose, glycerol) then YPG (YE, peptone, glycerol). Cultures incubated at 30°C for 2 days. Effect of glycerol concentration on the growth rate and biomass of G4KB2 were performed in duplicate in media containing: 2, 5, 10, 15 and 20% of glycerol. Cultures were incubated at 30°C on an orbital shaker (120 rpm). The growth rate of the yeast was analyzed by measuring the optical density and biomass concentration was determined gravimetrically. The highest biomass growth (13.9 g·dm-3 at 24 h and 19.2 g·dm-3after 40 h) was obtained during culture in medium containing 10% of pure glycerol.

TitleDecolorization of molasses vinasse with using a strain of lactic acid bacteria Lactobacilluscasei 0848
AutorMałgorzata Krzywonos, Magdalena Kopacz, Marta Wilk
Pages23–34
Keywordsvinasse, decolorization, lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus casei, design of experiment (DOE)
AbstractShow abstract
Vinasse, wastewater from distilleries, it’s quite danger for environment, because of the high value of COD and the colorants such as: melanoidins, caramels and the invert degradation products of alkaline hydrolysis. The aim of this study was to determine of the impact of the concentration of vinasse, addition of yeast extract, KH2PO4, (NH4)2SO4 and glucose on the decolorization of sugar beet vinasse with using of lactic acid bacteria strain Lactobacillus casei 0848. For this study was used the two-level factorial design of experiment (2k-p). Experiments were carried out in duplicate for 4 days in 250 cm3 Erlenmeyer flasks at 37°C and 120 rpm. Samples were collected every 12 h. Composition of the medium was formulated according to matrix of the experiment, and the minimum or maximum values of the concentration of vinasse, KH2PO4, (NH4)2SO4 and glucose were added. The medium was inoculated 1 cm3 inoculum. Effectiveness of decolorization was assayed spectrophotometrically (475 nm). It was obtained a good match of adopted design of the experiment (R2 = 0.9891). Statistically, the most significant for decolorization process was concentration of vinasse, glucose and (NH4)2SO4. The highest decolorization amounted to 24.78%.
